Betahistine acts on histamine receptors in the inner ear and the balance centres of the brain. It is thought to improve blood flow through the tiny vessels of the inner ear and to reduce the pressure of the fluid there, while helping the brain re-learn its sense of balance.

Nausea, indigestion, stomach discomfort and headache. Taking the tablet with food usually settles the stomach effects.

Tell your doctor if you have a stomach ulcer or a history of one, asthma, or a phaeochromocytoma, as betahistine may not be suitable. It can take a few weeks of regular use before attacks become less frequent, so do not stop early. It is a prescription medicine in Pakistan.
