High blood pressure (hypertension), and the prevention of angina attacks in stable and vasospastic angina. It is often combined with an ARB or a diuretic when one medicine alone does not control blood pressure.

Amlodipine blocks the calcium channels in the muscle of artery walls. With less calcium entering those cells the arteries relax and widen, so the heart pushes blood against less resistance. Blood pressure falls and the heart muscle receives more oxygen, which is what prevents angina.

Swelling of the ankles and feet, flushing, headache, dizziness, tiredness and palpitations. Ankle swelling is dose-related and is the most common reason people stop the medicine; tell your doctor rather than stopping on your own.

Do not stop amlodipine suddenly without medical advice, and do not take it with grapefruit juice, which raises the amount in your blood. Tell your doctor if you have severe liver disease, very low blood pressure or severe aortic stenosis, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Amlodipine is a prescription medicine in Pakistan.
